The toy DC motor in the picture is very small, about the size of a dime, with 2 battery leads. If the battery lead of the motor is connected to the battery, the shaft will rotate. If you reverse the leader, it will rotate in the opposite direction.
The nylon end cap is fixed in place by 2 pull rings. Inside the end cover, when the motor rotates, the electric brush of the motor transmits electric energy from the battery to the commutator. (Modern DC motors are usually brushless because brushes wear out and need to be replaced.)
The shaft fixes the rotor and commutator. A rotor is a group of electromagnets, in this case, three. The armature in the motor is a group of stacked thin metal plates, and thin copper wires are wound in the 3 poles of the rotor. Both ends of each wire (one per pole) are connected to a terminal, and then each of the 3 terminals is connected to a board of the commutator.
The last part of any DC motor is the stator. This motor is composed of the can body itself plus 2 curved permanent magnets. In a DC motor, the armature is the rotor and the magnetic field is the stator.
A very small motor has 2 small permanent magnets, a commutator, 2 brushes, 3 magnetic poles, and an electromagnet wound with metal wires. It works in the same way as the larger version, but on a much smaller scale.
